An earnest, candid post about what life is like with a Bull Terrier.

No matter how long I’ve lived along-side Bull Terriers I am always finding a deeper admiration for the breed. I am always looking at them and thinking about those lesser appreciated qualities that many never get to see, much less appreciate first hand that make me love this breed so much more.

Their self-confidence and their boldness. Of course, it can be a pain in the rear to have a dog who is so quick to put themselves front and center with the confidence (albeit…at times audacity) to inject themselves into situations that really have no need for a Bull Terrier creating chaos.

It can be embarrassing…humbling…and sometimes…just sometimes down right admirable to watch these dogs move through the world as though they are bullet proof. I watch those moments grinning ear to ear knowing full well how many other dogs would crumble…would hesitate… would size up the situation before
taking a chance.

A Bull Terrier? Not an ounce of hesitation as they throw themselves at whatever comes their way, never questioning the outcome. If you have never watched the original live-action “Franken-weenie” movie, or even if you have, I invite and encourage you to pay special attention to the scene in which The Bull Terrier goes dashing into the crowded house full of people screaming and running around chaotically.

I want you to pay attention to the Bull Terrier in that scene… those people are actually screaming and running around…and that Bull Terrier is having an absolute BALL within all that chaos. That wasn’t “faked” and that Bull Terrier shows no sign of cowering, being nervous or anxious. Think about that, a dog on a movie set, full of screaming people, a strange place, strange people suddenly having one giant freak out. And that Bull Terrier was turned loose in that crowd and 100% said  “HELL YEAH!”

Sturdiness

Their sturdiness is a blessing. I know this might ruffle a few feathers…but I’ve found myself watching other dog breeds work who have all the confidence and drive to throw themselves into situations…but  lack the sturdiness to handle the risk.

And those infamous song lyrics always go through my head
“If you’re gonna be dumb…you gotta be tough”

Bull Terriers were built to not just take the risk…but be sturdy enough to handle the consequences. A Bull Terrier can put themselves into a situation- get their (proverbial) clock cleaned from that situation- go back for more and not be even SLIGHTLY fazed at how close they came to k*lling themselves- Its insanity the things this breed will do for a few shits and giggles and then get back up and walk away.

If Bull Terriers were people, they would be members of the Jack Ass stunt crew.

Their adaptability.

I’ve always felt my lifestyle with my Bull Terriers very mildly touches on their adaptability considering so many people look at show-line Bull Terriers
as lazy couch potatoes. But I know so many Bull Terriers who are so adaptable and fit happily into so many different life styles.
From work, to sports to home bodies to farms with live stock to rat dispatch in the city. From children’s dress-up toys to visiting senior centers, bite work to personal protection dogs to just the family pet

While they may not excel effortlessly in all things, their ability to be happy and fulfilled in so many different lifestyles, homes and situations really does speak volumes about the breed as a whole in my opinion and every time I meet someone who owns a Bull Terrier and I see the ways in which they thrive I am reminded yet again what amazing creatures this breed is.
